Last week, I shared thoughts about the value of women-focused conferences as intentional spaces. Places where we can address the realities many of us face in technical industries, from being the only woman in the room to navigating high-stakes projects while managing caregiving roles.
This week, I saw that intention come to life in a powerful way at the U.S. Women in Nuclear (U.S. WIN) Conference.
More than 800 attendees gathered to learn, lead, and lift one another up. Over 20 workshops covered a full spectrum of topics from leadership development and workplace culture to cutting-edge technical tracks and policy discussions. The result? An experience that was both energizing and deeply grounding.
What stood out most isn’t just the number of attendees or the breadth of sessions, it is the spirit of participation.
At U.S. WIN, intention and purpose matter more than titles. Whether you’re a new grad or a senior executive, everyone shows up to engage. People ask questions, share insights, mentor both up and down, and listen. We don't just talk about the importance of leadership, we practice it. We didn’t just promote mentorship, we live it.
This is what happens when you create spaces designed for inclusion and growth. Women (and allies) don’t just attend: We show up, step up, and speak up and with some intention ignite action.
Here’s what I saw in action:
Speed mentoring and intentional mentor/mentee pairings
Honest conversations around career paths, failures, and pivots
Technical learning that spotlighted emerging innovation
Strategic discussions around workforce sustainability and leadership pipelines
Real talk on emotional intelligence, communication, and influence
We often see women as natural nurturers, coaches, and mentors; and this week proved that in full color. We’re already doing this work informally every day. So let’s lean into those strengths, recognize them as core leadership competencies, and bank on them as part of our industry’s growth strategy.
Conferences like U.S. WIN are where new leaders emerge, where relationships form that stretch careers in new directions, and where you can clearly hear the call for transformation: More connection. More collaboration. More courage.
